Z 11 Bernd von Arnim 1940

 

Bernd von Arnim was part of the 6st destroyer division at the outbreak of the war, operating in the Baltic Sea near Danzig and later transferred to the North Sea after the Polnish campaign. In September 1939 it was ordered to the North Sea for commerce warfare and was able to capture two Danish transports on their way to England. The ship took part in one mining operation in British coastal waters.

During in Operation Weserübung  the Bernd von Arnim was part of the Kriegsschiffgruppe 1 heading for Narvik. On 08.04.1940 it engaged the British destroyer Glowworm which was later sunk by the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper .

The ship was scuttled on 13.04.1940 in the Rombakkenfjord near Narvik after a battle with British destroyers because out of ammo and fuel.  In 1962, the wreck was broken down.

 

 

Named after the toprpedo boat commander Bernd von Arnim who died in an Operation of his G42 on 21.04.1917 near Dover.

01.09.1939:  

Together with the cruisers Köln , Leipzig , Nürnberg and other destroyers operations in the Danzig Beight.

13.09.1939:  

Together with Friedrich Eckold, Theodor Riedel  and the mine layers  Cobra, Hansestadt Danzig, Kaiser,  and Roland , the Bernd von Arnim lays the mine field "b" MARTHA-EINS in the North Sea. 960 Mines are laid during this operation, 240 from Bernd von Arnim .

07-09.10.1939:  

Raid to intercept Britain - Scandinavia trade together with battleship Gneisenau , CL Köln and destroyers Wilhlem Heidkamp ,  Erich Steinbrinck ,  Diether von Roeder ,  Theodor Riedel ,  Paul Jakobi,   Max Schulz Friedrich Ihn and Friedrich Eckoldt . No results.

Named after Hermann Künne, crewmwmber of a German torpedo boat in WW1, who died fighting against British soldiers at Zeebrügge.

Z 21 Wilhelm Heidkamp (1939)

Named after Wilhelm Heidkamp, naval engineer who saved the battlecruiser Seydlitz during the battle of the Doggerbank while opening glowing valves to prevent a magazine explosion.
